Training your dog to live with cats

Heard the phrase: “fighting like cats and dogs”?  It doesn’t have to be that way – with careful introductions, management and training, many dogs and cats can learn to live happily together.  Lots of dogs have a chase instinct and may want to chase cats and other small animals – not all dogs may be fast enough to catch the cat (unlike a greyhound) but the act of chasing is stressful for the cat and potentially rewarding for the dog.  Early and positive training is essential to help your dog live quite happily with cats and other small domestic animals.

Our leaflet provides guidance on:

  • How to introduce a dog to a home with a cat
  • How to manage dog-cat introductions
  • What to do if you have a confident dog and a fearful cat
  • What to do if you have a fearful dog and a confident cat

The leaflet was written for the Greyhound Trust but the training advice is suitable for all dogs – not just greyhounds!
